Is Easter Cancelled?

Is Easter Cancelled?

Here it is the beginning of Holy Week. The Holiest of weeks in the Christian tradition. Yet…….something is just not right……..something is different.

We missed the procession of Palms in church yesterday. I look at my calendar and there’s nothing on the schedule for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday worship. Nothing for Holy Saturday or Sunrise Worship. I sit here trying to figure out how to do Holy Week worship online; something I never imagined I’d be doing.

Something is just not right……something is different.

I’ve heard talk of Easter being cancelled and I can’t believe I’m hearing those words. I pass a little church in my community and the sign says; Closed for Coronavirus.

And I cringe…….and I want to shout- NO, NO, NO, Church in not closed and Easter is not cancelled!

Now I get that both are probably just a poor choice of words, or maybe I’m overreacting because of the unusual circumstances we are in the midst of. But it just doesn’t sit right with my heart.

I mean, come on, this is GOD we’re talking about. Have we forgotten how big God is? Have we forgotten that Easter cannot be cancelled because Jesus is already resurrected? Have we forgotten that even death couldn’t stop Easter? Surely if death couldn’t keep Jesus away, the Coronavirus cannot.

As I was reading a daily devotional, The Seedbed Daily Text, this morning, I read this:

Maybe you’ve heard the story of the 7-year-old boy who learned the story of the Israelites and the Red Sea in Sunday School. Upon being asked by his mother what he learned in class, he said, “Well, Mom, our teacher told us how God sent Moses behind enemy lines on a rescue mission to lead the Israelite people out of Egypt. When he got to the Red Sea, he had his army build a pontoon bridge and all the people walked across safely. Then, he radioed headquarters for reinforcements. They scrambled a squadron of F-16 Falcon Fighter Jets to blow up the bridge and all the Israelites were saved.”

“Now, Billy, is that really what your teacher taught you?” his mother asked.

“Well, no Mom, but if I told you what the teacher said, you’d never believe it in a million years!”

Of course, this story is referring to the story found in Exodus 14, but I as I thought about the time we living in now and the thoughts of Easter being cancelled just because we can’t gather in worship, instead of saying, NO, NO, NO…..I find myself saying, YES, YES, YES…….this is our God….nothing can stop him, not the Red Sea, not the Coronavirus, not the tomb.

So yes, It’s just Monday, but Easter is coming because Jesus came and is coming again! The same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead is still at work in our world today. Thanks be to God for his abundant love.

Blessings,

Pastor Cindy
